Zagora Today

Zagora is the most populated village in Pelion with about 3.000 people living there. It has been built in a way that resembles an amphitheatre with its houses starting at an altitude of 450 meters and rising up to the top of the village at 550 meters, it is set in a North East position.

It has kept its original division of four districts. These are Aghia Paraskevi ( Perahora), Aghia Kiriaki, Aghios Yeorgios and Metamorfosi tou Sotiros.

Its Residents

The majority of people are involved in the cultivation of apples which is fundamental to the economy.

A small number of the population have developed tourism related ventures or other occupation.

The Economy

The centralization and selling of the apples has been done via the Zagora CO-Operative since 1982. It has the first exporter of apples in Greece. Today the CO-OP is well organized with offices, cool houses, sorting areas and retail outlets.

There is also a Women's Agriculture - Tourism Co-operative in Zagora. It was founded in November 1993. The CO-OP was started by 50 Women who wanted to make good use of their local traditions, they have their own Cafe shop in the main square of the Village, Aghios Yeorgios and a workshop close to the square where they produce fresh spoon sweets from local fruit and food.

Their products are made without additives or preservatives. They can be found in shops all over Greece.

The Center of East Pelion

There are many public services available in Zagora these have been set up by the East Pelion authority.

The following are some of the services: A secondary school ( 11 yrs. - 18 yrs.), a primary school, 3 nursery schools, a fully equipped health center, the state phone company office (OTE), the electricity office (ΔΕΗ), the National insurance office (ΙΚA), the Agriculture Bank, the magistrate's court, Police Station, Forestry dept, and the dept of Agriculture.
